Macarena Bernal

b.1982, El Salvador, Diego de Almagro, Chile. Born in the Atacama Desert and raised in the city of Iquique near the ocean, where as a teenager, took her first steps in jewellery. She later relocated to capital city Santiago where she successfully completed Finis Terrae University School of Arts Bachelor of Visual Arts program in 2005. Since then she has been developing her own jewellery practice, taking classes and apprenticeships with jewelers in Santiago Chile, Lima Peru, and Auckland New Zealand. From 2013 to 2016 she worked as a bench jeweller for retail, this experience allowed her to develop her skills as maker and positioned her in the jewellery business. In response to the deep call to go back to arts, in 2015 she joined Manukau Institute of Technology’s Creative Arts faculty in Otara, New Zealand, where she graduated with a level 6 Advanced Diploma in Contemporary Jewellery Practice in 2016. Currently she is pursuing a Masters Degree in Visual Arts from Otago Politechnic in Dunedin, NZ.
