Ashley grew up on the West Coast of the South Island. He studied with Peter Elsbury in Nelson and Peter Minturn in Auckland, then spent a year working with Mint Jewellery Collective in Nelson. He also spent a year working at the Quoil workshop in Wellington with Belinda Hager. I am interested in the way jewellery involves both creativity and construction. The combination of tools, materials and processes along with design and creativity and how these affect each other. I have been making jewellery full time since 2003 and now live in Nelson. Recently I have been focusing on the source of my materials. I use locally sourced, ethically mined gold in a lot of my work and about seventy five percent of the silver I use is recycled. I try to reflect both the human and natural environment in my work by using symbols and materials that have meaning to me and represent where I come from.
