Cheryl works primarily with silver and modern materials such as silicone rubber and resin. Her fascination with combining the traditional and with the modern started during her four year honours degree course in Dundee, Scotland. She is now based in Auckland and working at Workshop 6. In my current work I have taken a contemporary look at precious stones by hand crafting and casting them in different materials and setting them in traditional style settings. In doing this I hope to question what makes a material precious. Can industrial materials, if crafted and manipulated to create a unique object, become beautiful and in turn valuable?
