The delegation of twenty-three artists to the Handwerksmesse International Trade Fair (7-13 March) is supported by Creative New Zealand and includes emerging and established jewellery makers.
“This is a great opportunity for some of our talented makers to get exposure on the global stage, and exhibit alongside world-renowned artists in front of a discerning and influential audience,” said Jude Chambers, Creative New Zealand Manager, International Services and Initiatives.
For the first time at the fair New Zealand makers will feature in a booth in the Frame Galleries as part of Iwa: New Zealand Makers, Contemporary Jewellery from Aotearoa. Led by Wellington-based Makers 101, and curated by Peter Deckers the booth will feature the work of fourteen makers and include nine featured perspectives in contemporary jewellery spanning four decades of practice.
“We are excited to support this new, industry-led initiative which will extend our presence at this highly respected fair. All of the artists participating will benefit from Peter’s expertise and experience as a respected maker and lecturer at the Whitireia Institute of Technology,” said Jude Chambers.
“With Hilda Gascard Peter has also successfully presented several projects internationally through their Handshake Project mentoring and exhibition programme and this experience will be invaluable in Munich,” she said.
In another new initiative, Auckland-based gallery Objectspace in partnership with Creative New Zealand, has a pivotal role coordinating between the fair and exhibiting artists to provide specialist knowledge and resource to support the promotion of the IWA: New Zealand Makers exhibition. Objectspace Director Kim Paton will travel with the New Zealand delegation to develop long-term relationships.
“We’re delighted Objectspace will be in Munich to help our artists make the most of this great opportunity. Their expertise and experience combined with the international reputation of some of our more established artists will be invaluable to the delegation as a whole,” said Jude Chambers.
Wellington-based jewellers Karl Fritsch and Lisa Walker have again been selected toexhibit at Schmuck, a major fair attraction highly regarded on the international jewellery exhibition calendar and the oldest exhibition of its type. Their work will also feature in the Frame Galleries booth.
Whitireia Institute of Technology student Renee Pearson and alumna Grace Yu Piper have been selected to exhibit at Talente, the showcase for emerging makers and designers seeking to launch their careers. They will be supported by Creative New Zealand to freight their work to Munich.
